Impromptu BakeOff, June 10, 2010

I learned when I came to this meeting, the first for me in 6 weeks, that I was supposed to be presenting my antique toys. Unfortunately I did not know about this change on the schedule. I had thought I was doing that June 24.

But we decided to have an impromptu Bake Off today which turned out very open and very laid back. Following are some of the ideas discussed. We also sort of made up a new schedule because of this unplanned change today.  There was an interest to come to the author's home to view the antique toys; we will do that on July 8. Please see the planned schedule in the next posting.

Invasive species: Various attendees vented about the weeds invading their gardens. This expanded to discussion of pest animals as well. I commented that many of the invasive flora and fauna here in this country are blamed on origins on other continents, but when you travel the world, you see native species from North America that have become the pests there. We discussed why this happens and what can be done about it. Dick asked if anyone thought that eventually invasives would use up the special environment they find in the foreign local and run out of steam and die out. Who knows, but it has not happened yet. A natural next idea was that really the invasives are the humans!

Job stress and work conditions: Considerable discussion ensued about this. Tim put forth some of his ideas that he is teaching his charges at his work.

Healthcare: We discussed costs briefly. Inevitably doctor burnout came up and the blog author didn't even bring it up this time. We discussed some of the reasons for these problems. One big cause is patient's unreasonable expectations and unwillingness to contribute to their own well being. Would having some money incentive at the bottom line encourage patients to take better care of themselves?

An unrelated thought:  Creative thinkers need no restrictions.
